PERFORMANCES

ĐEP| VAN HUYNH COMPANY [United Kingdon]

“The living need light and the dead need music” – Vietnamese proverb

Đẹp is the Vietnamese word for beautiful. With his latest dance work, the UK based choreographer Dam Van Huynh explores influences from his South East Asian heritage. In Vietnamese culture, death is also a form of rebirth. When a person dies, the family and community enact rituals that will enable the deceased to pass into another realm, a higher state of being.

The work sees a shift in Van Huynh’s movement language as it delves ever deeper into the nature of the human condition. The dancers in ĐẸP are fragile and vulnerable, free of distraction, their movement begins at the point where the mind transcends the physical self. Amplified and tracked by Martyna Poznanska’s numinous score, the movement in ĐẸP invites the audience to let go, reaching ever closer to the feeling of being alive.

STILL LOVE | EFTHYMIA FENIA CHATZAKOU & CSENGER K. SZABO   [Germany]

Still Love is a duet about relationships. Our individual stories come into dialogue through physical interaction in a playground-like environment. We play games to relearn and to reinvent our love. A landscape of states emerges where both individuals respond instinctively to each other
as well as the environment. The characters develop a movement language that emanates from their curiosity to discover, understand and communicate with each other. They are working in silence, listening to what the movements and pauses can tell. This atmosphere allows the audience to tune into the characters’ journey and the patterns that would otherwise be invisible.

METAMORPHOSIS | PAPIA CHAKRABORTY  [India]

The piece looks closely into what happens when one goes through the process of transformation – What transition does one face? What exactly does a caterpillar go through while it is in the cocoon phase before becoming a butterfly? Often, to cope with a certain circumstance, situation, environment, person, feeling, we acquire certain patterns in order to fit in or adjust. Sometimes, these patterns become such an intrinsic part of our lives that we do not even realize the line between an acquired pattern and our true self. When certain circumstances change and those changes shake the roots of your life, you find yourself questioning these patterns that don’t seem to fit or serve you any longer.

‘BEAUTY AND THE BEAST’ | HSU CHEN-WEI DANCE COMPANY  [Taiwan]

“Beauty and the beast”  leads the audience into a mystical world where body and soul converge, conveying intense emotions and a sense of ritual through the dancers’ delicate yet powerful movements.

The piece resembles a ceremonial ritual, with precise and tension-filled movements that reveal primal human emotions and strength. Each gesture, each breath, is a tribute to life, like firelight flickering in the darkness, bringing hope and renewal. The agile movements of the dancers are like the beats of ritual drums, quick-paced and full of energy, evoking the fervor of a vibrant celebration.

The entire performance is divided into four stages: Primal, Pure, Celebration, and Evolution. Through the meticulous depiction of human movement, it explores deep emotions faced by humanity when confronting nature and the self. The body is like a burning flame, warm yet destructive, representing the fragility and resilience of life, and the fusion of beauty and strength.

STUTTER| SABITA SHAW [Kolkata, India]

Expression helps to convey one’s thoughts but what if you are not given a chance to do so.
What if people make faces when you speak? What when you are not heard and avoided?
What when you are scared to talk and express yourself?
Your voice becomes a reason for people’s laughter.
People think I am disabled ?
Bullied, Teased – I used to hold back my words..

A A A …. K K K… Ma Ma Ma…..
And I turned back and walked.
This is how I Talked.

20 Years fighting to break the ice and overcome – to gain confidence to stand… I am proud to
say I am halfway through.
